Helping Everyday Tasks Feel Easier

Daily routine activities should not seem like conquering Mount Everest. However, dressing, writing, eating, organization, and processing sensory information may become challenging tasks that reduce self-esteem and impact the quality of life of many children and adults.

At Trinity Medical Behavioral Health, we know how difficult it is to cope with these difficulties for an individual and his/her family. In our Occupational Therapy practice, we offer solutions that will allow a person to develop skills and become independent while performing daily activities.

Everybody learns in his/her own way. This is why we develop treatment programs that are tailored to each individual considering his/her advantages, weaknesses, and lifestyle.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy provides assistance in acquiring, developing or regaining the skills necessary for activities of daily living. Such skills might include dressing, feeding, writing, play, work, routine management, enhancing coordination, as well as processing sensory information.

Occupational therapists consider diagnoses not as primary. Rather, they concentrate on the effects that physical, developmental, sensory, emotional, or cognitive issues have on daily functioning and take a gradual approach to enhancing the ability to be independent in daily routines.

In case of children, Occupational Therapy usually helps with developmental milestones achievement, school attendance, handwriting improvement, self-care skills development, and sensory modulation.

Adulthood is the period when individuals need Occupational Therapy after suffering an injury, undergoing some surgery, having a stroke, experiencing a neurological issue, or facing mental health problems. Additionally, Occupational Therapy is helpful for adjusting to the changes that impact daily activities.

We coordinate our efforts with families, physicians, behavior analysts, schools, and other therapists to provide a comprehensive approach to care.

Signs and Symptoms That May Indicate Occupational Therapy Is Needed

There is no one face for any problem. Some kids have problems in their schoolwork, while other kids have trouble with basic tasks in the house. Grown-ups can see a difference in behavior following an injury, sickness, or disease, making everyday tasks more difficult. Early recognition will help in addressing the problem before it gets worse.

Fine Motor Difficulties

Tasks that require small hand movements may become challenging.

Common signs include:

  • Difficulty holding a pencil
  • Poor handwriting
  • Trouble using scissors
  • Difficulty buttoning clothing
  • Problems tying shoes
  • Weak hand strength

Sensory Processing Challenges

Some people react more strongly—or less strongly—to everyday sensory experiences.

Signs may include:

  • Sensitivity to loud sounds
  • Avoiding certain clothing textures
  • Difficulty with bright lights
  • Constant movement or fidgeting
  • Seeking deep pressure or movement
  • Becoming overwhelmed in busy places

Daily Living Challenges

Daily routines should become easier with age and practice. When they don’t, Occupational Therapy may help.

These challenges can include:

  • Difficulty brushing teeth
  • Trouble getting dressed
  • Problems feeding independently
  • Difficulty following routines
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Struggles completing age-appropriate tasks

Motor Coordination Difficulties

Balance and coordination affect many everyday activities.

Signs may include:

  • Frequent falls
  • Poor balance
  • Difficulty catching or throwing a ball
  • Trouble riding a bicycle
  • Awkward movement patterns
  • Delayed motor milestones

Attention and Executive Function Challenges

Some children and adults have difficulty planning, organizing, or completing tasks from beginning to end.

Common signs include:

  • Easily distracted
  • Difficulty following multi-step directions
  • Poor time management
  • Trouble staying organized
  • Difficulty transitioning between activities
  • Forgetfulness during daily routines

No two people experience the same challenges. Our Occupational Therapy evaluations help identify strengths alongside areas that may benefit from additional support, allowing us to create a personalized treatment plan that fits each individual’s goals.
