Evaluating and Diagnosing Autism refers to assessing whether an individual meets the requirements for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a developmental disorder affecting people’s interaction with others, learning ability, response to the environment, and ways of communication and thinking. Each individual with autism is unique, meaning that the level of needed assistance varies.
Some individuals may present with symptoms from early childhood; however, some people get diagnosed with autism later in life, at adolescence and adulthood stages. Correct evaluation allows getting a better idea about certain symptoms, skills, and needs for assistance.
Trinity Medical Behavioral Health’s providers conduct comprehensive evaluations according to evidence-based procedures. Our approach does not involve any rushing. Instead, we consider the individual as a whole. This involves looking at the individual’s medical history, their development, their means of communication, behaviors, and functional skills.
Diagnosing is not about a name and a number. Rather, it is about coming to a conclusion that will enable others to make informed decisions regarding treatment, education, and the management of healthcare.
There are parents that, for months, if not years, have been trying to make sense of why their son or daughter struggles with social skills and why they respond to different stimuli in a way that is somehow different to the norm. Likewise, there are adults that have been struggling to respond to the question, “why have you had problems with communication, organization, and why have you had issues with the way you experience life throughout the duration of your life to date?”
